Well! That time has come. TOMORROW I RETIRE!!!. I must say that I am facing this prospect with mixed feelings. Sad because I love my students and will miss them all very much. We have been friends for many years now. Happy because I can now do the things I didn't have time for and really it has become more and more difficult with the fatigue. I don't think it has hit me yet but I am sure it will especially as my youngest son has moved to his own place this week. My husband is out all day every day so the house will seem very quiet. I keep going up to Joe's room and just standing looking at it. It is much different than when he went to university. I can't explain it really but it is weird. He only moved on friday but I miss him already. As for finishing work I have lots to do and may even go back to studying. I will probably do some voluntary work and am quite involved with my church but I am still concerned about the gap in my life as I am very busy with my work. I suppose I will get used to it but my main concern is keeping moving and getting up and doing something in the mornings although I have never been a person who has a lie in. I just wanted to share my retirement with you so thank you all for listening.

Hi, I retired last year & also with v mixed feelings as I loved my job but it was just getting too much. The first weeks were VERY odd, so do give yourself time to adjust to a different way of life. At the beginning I had to make an effort to get out of the house every day, as otherwise I struggled to get going. But a year later I love it! Much happier, and having time to look after my health I think has really helped me. Enjoy it, and have as much fun as you can. Polly

Hi Sheila
Good luck for today you are bound to have very mixed feelings especially when your job has been as rewarding as yours! I understand how you feel about your son, my youngest daughter moved into her own home last month, my eldest moved out last year so now just my 18 yr old son and my hubby! I miss my girls and the house is very quiet!
Im sure you will soon fill your days we adapt so quickly Ive been off work now for 6 weeks and already cant imagine how I managed! Dont know how I'll manage when I go back!
Make the most of time for you Sheila you've earned it and make yourself have a lie-on tomorrow at least!! Take care Love Ceri xx

Hi Sheila,

Good luck on your retirement, I'm sure you will enjoy it!
I can sympathise with you about your son leaving home. My daughter is going off to Canada soon for a few months and it feels so different to her being away at uni.
I do so much housework each day (can no longer clean the whole house in one day like before!) and I always do it first thing on a morning, then once that's out of the way the day is mine to do what I like, just a meal to cook at teatime.
You will soon fill your days and wonder how you ever managed to work!

Love, Doreen xx

hi Sheila,

today will be a funny day for you for sure.

i hope you get a good send off from work.

totally understand about the feeling of emptiness at home, although my Daughter has long flown the nest. where every they are and what every they are doing they will never leave you. once a Mum always a Mum i say.

i haven't worked for many a year, and am used to the house to myself in the day, i fill my time well. housework, shopping etc. always done in the morning, leaving me the afternoons to do as i please, whether it's a visit to a friend for a good old natter, a potter out if i feel like it, catching up with something i've sky plussed.

my Hubby will be retiring at the end of next year, he wanted to stay on longer but his hours have got longer as he does callout, also his pension from work will be at maximum when he's 60. so i will have to get used to him at home .. lol, although he can't sit still for long. he always finds something to do be it in the garden, sometimes plays golf etc.

i am sure you will adapt quickly and wonder how you managed to work,

Suzanne x

Just wanted to wish you a happy retirement and hope they gave you a good send off. My Husband has retired and he says he does not know how he ever found time to go to work. He never stops. If you are an active person you will easily fill your day so don't worry and ENJOYThumpUp

Sheila- I hope you managed to enjoy some parts of your day today. I too would like to wish you a happy retirement and now hopefully you can work to live instead of having to live to work!
Have you also thought about going into schools to help on the reading schemes they do? I'm sure they would welcome you with open arms and you would soon have a new little band of students to enjoy!
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Sheila, I hope you enjoy your retirement, it gives you more time to do as you please. Our house will be fairly empty after September, my daughter goes to uni, and my other daughter has moved out now. My husband has mobility problems and a heart condition, so is unable to work, so we are home together. I work three days a week, and at the moment its a struggle, but at the same time I need to be working for financial reasons, so, I will continue as I am for a while yet. Good luck!!Smile

Smile Hi and thank you everyone for your lovely replies. It has been such a nice day albeit emotional at times. Lots of good wishes, cards, flowers, hugs, kisses and tears. I am looking forward to a rest with no paperwork or accounts to do but will definitely miss my lovely friends. I will certainly be keeping in touch with some of them and meeting up occasionally for lunch or coffee. Thanks once again for your kind wishes and thoughts. Are any of you going to Warwick next week?

Lyn...I am looking forward to meeting you too. I have got an email about next local meeting. It is in my diary and I should be able to come.

Hi Sheila good luck in your retirement. The rheummy nurse said to me before i retired that i would feel the benefit of being able to pace my own days once i retired and she was right. Enjoy it, it's not the end of the road but the beginning of a new one.

Hi Bev. Thanks for that. It will certainly be good not to have to be ready to go out for 8 am. I feel like I am holiday at the moment so that's good

Hi Sheila,

Just wanted to wish you a very happy retirement - I`m sorry it`s late, but we`ve been on holiday for two weeks, only just got back late Weds. night.

Having retired a few years ago myself, it does take some getting used to at first, but there is always something to do, friends to catch up on etc., so you won`t be bored.

Take care,

Kathleen C x
